Eight surprises to be found in LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight

From the One Ring to secret playable characters, there are plenty of surprises to be found hiding within LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight.

There's certainly no shortage of things to see and do in LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight, from tackling 22 action-based missions to exploring a sprawling Gotham City set across four main islands. However, taking a deeper dive into the latest TT Games title reveals even more impressive layers just waiting to be peeled back, as players discover just how much the developer has packed into the Caped Crusader’s latest interactive adventure.

With that in mind, here are 8 secrets, mysteries, pop culture references and downright weirdness that’s waiting for players as they immerse themselves in LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight.

1 – The One Ring

Located inside the expandable Batcave is a nod to The Lord of the Rings movie trilogy, another Warner Bros. franchise. Exploring the rocks surrounding the base of Batman’s underground base reveals the precious One Ring, although it’s worth noting you can’t actually interact with the golden trinket.

2 – The Italian Job

Speaking of Warner Bros. films, heading to the far side of Arkham Asylum on the North Island reveals a crashed bus in the water, with lots of money scattered around. This is a nod to the ending of The Italian Job, with the original 1969 version starring future Alfred actor, Michael Caine.

3 – Gentleman Ghost challenge

The undead villain pops up in a couple of surprise LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight cameos, if you know where to look that is. For instance, players who attempt the ‘Taking a Photo of Gentleman Ghost’ challenge will need to head to Arkham Asylum and keep an eye out for puddles of white ecotoplasm on the road.

Standing in the spooky goo and selecting Photo Mode’s edit screen from the options menu reveals the ghost-with-the-most in the picture. Exiting the captured photo will then reward players with a task completion message.

4 – Scary bunnies

Also to be found in the forest near Arkham Asylum are three sinister bunnies in trees, all looking down at a mysterious minifigure holding a sword. Those are a nod to a well-known Easter egg of a trio of white rabbits located on the grounds of Rocksteady Studios’ first Arkham Asylum game.

5 – Keyboard Cat

At one point in ‘The Party Man’ mission, players have to use Catwoman’s ability to summon one of her furry friends to silentyly enter a security room. Hopping up onto a desk in front of a sleeping guard, it’s possible to recreate the classic Keyboard Cat meme by walking on the keys and watching the image on the monitor change.

6 – Play as Alfred, Lucius Fox and Bruce Wayne

Despite LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight only featuring seven playable characters, there are in fact three additional secret characters to unlock. First up is Alfred, who can be accessed by selecting the completed ‘Home Sweet Home’ section of the Mimes mission. Once the mission starts, select Alfred, hold Down on the D-pad and then exit the game to add the Wayne butler to your playable roster.

The same basic method can also be used to unlock Lucius Fox and Bruce Wayne, with both available in the ‘WayneTech R&D’ section of the Wayne Industries mission. Select each character one at a time, hold Down on the D-pad and then quit the mission to gain two more playable faces.

7 – Batcave customisation

Ahead of LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight’s launch, TT Games revealed that players would be able to customise their Batcaves with all sorts of items. That’s certainly true, but the options to swap and change stuff around as required goes much deeper than you may think.

For instance, it’s possible to alter the look of the various giant Bat logos in the underground lair. To do so, simply walk up to the computer console in front of each one, select ‘Interact’, choose the background colour you like and press the right thumbstick to change the Bat symbol.

The same customisation options also apply to the Batcomputer, with multiple (and often hilarious) free screensavers available, along with different computer models accessible by pressing down on the right thumbstick.

8 – LEGO Batman high scores

Of the many items that can be placed inside the Batcave, two in particular have some very subtle references on them. Both the Bat Pinball Machine and a mini LEGO Batman video game feature leaderboards with high scores and abbreviations of famous Bat actors such as Val Kilmer, Christian Bale, Robert Pattinson and more.

LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight’s is available to purchase as a Standard Edition and Deluxe Edition on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S and PC via Steam right now. The TT Games title will also be released on Switch 2 on September 18, alongside the upcoming Mayhem Collection DLC.
